Creating a Tree Windbreak

If you live in an area where the wind blows almost constantly as we do in Arizona, then a windbreak is really essential.

Types of Suitable Trees

Suggested trees that we carry for a wind break are:

  • Arizona Cypress
  • Alligator Juniper
  • Eastern Red Juniper
  • Italian Stone Pine
  • Rocky Mountain Juniper
  • Eldarica Pine

Tall and Wide Tree Windbreak

If you select other trees choose ones that are highly drought resistant, and have a lot of bulk to the tree formation. As you can see if the image here, the trees have not been trimmed up from the bottom. This gives us the maximum blockage of the wind.

How to Plant a Tree Wind Break

It is very important when planning the layout of your wind break that you know the prevailing direction of the wind. The trees should be planted at an angle to the prevailing wind.

As a part of preparation, research the width of trees. What will they be in 3 to 5 years? Plant your trees at a distance apart that is no greater than the projected size of the trees after 5 years. The windbreak will slowly fill the gaps between trees.
